Phonics & Spelling
At St Paul’s we aim to give the children the phonic knowledge and skills they need in the early years so as they progress through the school, this knowledge is embedded within their learning. As older students, they will be able to decode unfamiliar words confidently and become fluent and enthusiastic readers.
From the very beginning of a child’s school life, we aim to instil a love of reading within each child, through engaging story books that children can take home and share with their family, to high quality texts being explored through the curriculum. Each classroom having a selection of quality story and non-fiction books in an engaging and inviting reading area.
Phonics is taught daily from Reception to Year 2 and then reviewed from years 3 to 6. In 2021 we reviewed our Phonics programme and have now invested in the 'Rocket Phonics' scheme of work which all of the teaching and support staff received training on. The programme teaches new letter sounds over a longer period allowing children to have the time to learn them and explore different ways of using them in words for both reading and writing. This then links to our Key Stage 2 spelling programme 'No Nonsense Spellings'.
We strongly believe parents are key in supporting their children on their journey to become a confident and fluent reader. To find out more about how you can help your child with reading please click on the links below.
